Rider
A rider, also called an endorsement, is an add-on to an insurance policy that changes its standard terms, either adding coverage, excluding it, or adjusting a limit for a specific item or situation. The Allen Thomas Group uses riders to fine-tune a business's policy so it actually matches unusual equipment, high-value property, or specific operational risks the base policy wasn't built for.
How a Rider Works
A standard commercial policy is written broadly enough to fit a wide range of businesses, which means it often doesn't account for one specific piece of equipment, a valuable item, or an unusual activity. A rider is attached to the policy to fill that gap, either by adding a coverage the base form doesn't include, raising a sublimit that would otherwise be too low, or narrowing coverage for a known risk.
Common Examples of Riders
- A jewelry or fine art rider raising the limit above the policy's standard property sublimit
- An equipment rider covering a specific expensive tool or machine at full replacement value
- A communicable disease rider adjusting coverage for illness-related claims
Why Riders Matter for Getting Full Value From a Policy
Base commercial policies almost always cap coverage for certain categories of property, like cash, jewelry, or specialized equipment, at a low sublimit regardless of the item's actual value. Without a rider raising that limit, a business that loses a $40,000 piece of equipment covered under a $5,000 sublimit collects only $5,000, leaving a serious gap that's easy to miss until a claim is filed.
Rider vs. Standalone Policy
A rider modifies an existing policy and typically costs less than writing a separate policy, but it also inherits that policy's overall terms, cancellation date, and insurer. For very large or unusual exposures, it's sometimes more practical to write a standalone policy instead of stacking multiple riders onto a base form.
