Blanket Additional Insured Endorsement

Last updated: July 2026

A blanket additional insured endorsement automatically extends liability coverage to any party the insured is contractually required to add, such as a client, landlord, or general contractor, without needing to issue a separate named endorsement each time a new contract requires it. The Allen Thomas Group sets this up proactively for contractors and vendors who regularly sign contracts requiring additional insured status, since it removes a recurring administrative bottleneck that can otherwise delay signing new work.

How It Differs From a Standard Additional Insured Endorsement

Without a blanket endorsement, adding a new additional insured means contacting the carrier or agent, requesting a specific endorsement naming that party, and waiting for it to be issued before a compliant certificate of insurance can go out. A blanket endorsement instead extends additional insured status automatically to anyone the insured has agreed, in a written contract, to add, as long as the requirement fits the endorsement's conditions (often tied to work performed by or on behalf of the insured).

Why Contractors and Vendors Rely on This

A general contractor might sign dozens of subcontracts a year, each requiring the sub to name the GC as an additional insured on its liability policy. Without a blanket endorsement, the sub's insurance agent would need to process a separate endorsement request for every single contract, creating delays that can hold up project starts. With a blanket endorsement in place, the sub's certificate of insurance can typically be issued the same day, since the contractual requirement itself satisfies the endorsement's conditions.

What It Doesn't Do

A blanket additional insured endorsement doesn't expand what's covered, only who is covered. It still only applies to liability arising from the named insured's work or operations, not to the additional insured's own independent negligence unrelated to that work. It also doesn't override other policy exclusions or limits, so a business still needs adequate underlying limits for the endorsement to mean much in practice.
